Arts Educational Booklet Assignment
In the integrated module between Visual Communications and Introduction to the Arts 2, I embarked on an assignment to create an Educational Activity Booklet, focusing on Alfian Saat’s play, Homesick. The aim was to engage, entertain, and educate secondary school students about the conveyance of values through theatre. I honed various skills during this process. My design skills were put to the test as I created an eye-catching cover using techniques like typography, illustration, and photo collage. I also ensured a good design layout for maximum content readability. I developed content that included background information on the playwright, featured play, significant themes in relation to values, and relevance of these values to today’s youth.
The assignment posed several challenges. Balancing the need for comprehensive information while keeping the booklet concise and engaging was a significant content limitation. I had to ensure that any activities involving materials were low-cost and readily available in most school classrooms, which was a resource consideration. Ensuring the relevance of the content and activities to the target audience - secondary school students - was another challenge. Despite these challenges, I designed three activities on Cultural Identity, Racial Prejudice, and Social Belonging with clear objectives, instructions, and outcomes. This assignment, completed using Adobe Illustrator, was a valuable learning experience that enhanced my design skills, content creation abilities, and understanding of educational resource planning.
