Makan Index Interview

In 2023, I participated in an interview with CNA on the Makan Index 2.0 study, which looks at the cost of eating out in Singapore. As a student and food enthusiast, I wanted to share my views on the topic and use my skills in budgeting, communication and cultural awareness.

I prepared for the interview by researching the study, compiling questions and rehearsing my answers. I chose a hawker centre as the location because it was convenient, accessible and relevant to the topic. The interview lasted 15 minutes and I had a friendly and informative conversation with the interviewer. I faced some challenges, such as background noise and the weather, but also some opportunities, such as building rapport and clarifying misunderstandings.

I made three main points during the interview: eating out on a budget can be an enjoyable experience, trying different dishes and cuisines is enriching, and balancing indulgence with budget-conscious choices is key. I gave some examples and anecdotes to illustrate my points, such as specific dishes, places or experiences. I analysed the strengths and weaknesses of my arguments and evaluated the interviewer's feedback.

The interview had implications for myself, my audience and society. I gained skills, applied knowledge and demonstrated values. I provided information, raised awareness and made a difference. I raised issues, offered perspectives and inspired change. I contributed to understanding, discussing and improving the cost and quality of eating out in Singapore.

I am grateful to CNA for the opportunity. Watch the full interview here.
